As promised after last week's leaked images, Samyang has debuted its first ever autofocus lens for the Canon EF mount: the Samyang AF 14mm F2.8 EF joins the rest of the Samyang/Rokinon AF line of lenses, all of which were made for Sony FE mount until today.
The optical formula of the new lens consists of 15 lens elements in 10 groups, including 2 aspherical elements, 4 high-refractive elements, and 1 extra-low dispersion element to ensure the best possible image quality "from center to corner of the wide 116.6° angle of view."
The lens is also very light, weighing in at 485g (without the lens cap), compared to Canon's own 14mm F2.8L II IS USM, which clocks in at nearly 650g.
Here's how Samyang describes its new lens:
This first EF mount autofocus lens from Samyang encapsulates the brand's universally respected optical technology, especially in the wide angle lens category. From a total of 15 lenses in 10 groups, 7 special optic lenses have been chosen in the production of this lens, to maximize the image quality.
The use of 2 aspherical lenses, 4 high-refractive lenses, and 1 extra-low dispersion lens minimizes distortion and various aberrations while producing crystal clear resolution. The remarkably even image quality from centre to corner of the wide 116.6-degree angle of view appears distinctly on its MTF chart.
And here is a selection of sample images captured by Samyang photographers ahead of the launch. They're not very high resolution, but they should give you a basic idea of the lens' capabilities:
We won't know how this lens compares to Canon's $2,100 EF 14mm F2.8L II IS USM until we get our hands on a test copy, but at a price of just 700 Euro (~$840 USD) it gives Canon users a much more affordable ultra wide-angle option.
The lens is scheduled to ship in February of 2018. To learn more about this lens, visit the Samyang Global website.
