Diane Arbus Gets NY Times Obituary 46 Years After Her Death

Diane Arbus was honored with an obituary by the New York Times today, 46 years after the renowned American portrait photographer died. It was one of 15 obituaries published today as part of a project titled Overlooked.

Overlooked will regularly feature new obituaries of people in the past that never received them for one reason or another. Today, on International Women’s Day, the project features the lives of accomplished women.

“Looking back at the obituary archives can provide a stark lesson in how society valued various achievements and achievers,” write Times editors Jessica Bennett and Amisha Padnani. “Since 1851, The New York Times has published thousands of obituaries. The vast majority chronicled the lives of men, mostly white ones; even in the last two years, about 20% of our subjects were female.

“This series recalls the stories of those who left indelible marks but were nonetheless overlooked.”

The Times describes Arbus as “a photographer whose portraits have compelled or repelled generations of viewers.” Here’s an excerpt of the new obituary:

Diane Arbus was a daughter of privilege who spent much of her adult life documenting those on the periphery of society. Since she killed herself in 1971, her unblinking portraits have made her a seminal figure in modern-day photography and an influence on three generations of photographers, though she is perhaps just as famous for her unconventional lifestyle and her suicide

After decades of intense examination of her work and life, perhaps there is room to understand Arbus as a woman driven by artistic vision as well as personal compulsion, and her photographs as documents of empathy as well as exploitation. Arbus herself hinted at the difficulty of understanding and interpreting images.

“A photograph is a secret about a secret,” she said. “The more it tells you the less you know.”

If you’re interested in learning more about Arbus and her work, here’s a 30-minute documentary about her that was part of the Masters of Photography series from the 1970s:

The Times will continue to publish new obituaries in Overlooked every week in 2018.

Canon got it right on International Women's Day

Photo by Mario Calvo on Unsplash

"For International Women's Day, Canon..." as I read the subject line of the email, I cringe at the possible endings to that sentence.

Not outside the realm of possibilities is something like, "Releases Commemorative Pink Camera Strap!" In 2018 I think we're better than that. Probably. I keep reading.

"...Lends Support to 'Women Photograph'" is how it ends, and I feel a real sense of relief. This was an organization I knew and had covered in the past. It aims to 'elevate the voices of female visual journalists,' offering an additional resource for editors as well as grants and workshops for female photographers. I read on.

"Canon will work with Women Photograph to aid their travel grant program which funds female and non-binary photographers to attend workshops, hostile environment trainings, festivals, and other developmental opportunities."

If you're a brand looking to grab a slice of the #MeToo pie, you could definitely do much worse than this. Case in point: McDonald's put on a master class this year in getting it wrong. The fast food giant announced that it would be turning its logo upside down to recognize International Women's Day... a "W" instead of an "M"... for women... get it? Critics spoke up quickly, pointing out that it felt like an empty gesture coming from a company that can afford to do much more.

The upside down arches were on my mind when I started reading that press release from Canon this morning, so it felt very reassuring to see the brand pledging real support behind an effort created by, and created for, women photographers. Sure, it's all marketing at the end of the day, and I truly hope Canon's support of Women Photograph doesn't begin and end with a one-time workshop. Issuing a press release is cheap. Following through, and staying committed in the long term isn't.

But if you're going to talk about supporting women on International Women's Day, please don't just give us an empowering logo and a T-shirt. Instead, put your money where your mouth is.

CANON U.S.A. LENDS ITS SUPPORT TO WOMEN PHOTOGRAPH, AN INITIATIVE CREATED TO PROMOTE THE REPRESENTATION OF FEMALE PHOTOJOURNALISTS

Association Will Help Elevate the Voices of Female and Non-binary Photographers

MELVILLE, N.Y., March 8, 2018 – In conjunction with International Women’s Day (IWD), the global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is excited to announce their association with Women Photograph, a movement created to promote the representation of female photojournalists. Canon will work with Women Photograph to aid their travel grant program which funds female and non-binary photographers to attend workshops, hostile environment trainings, festivals, and other developmental opportunities.

Launched in 2017 and founded by photojournalist Daniella Zalcman, Women Photograph is an initiative to shift the gender makeup of the photojournalism community. A private database that includes more than 700 independent female documentary photographers based in 91 countries, any commissioning editor or organization can utilize the database for their photojournalistic hiring needs.

“I can’t think of a better way to celebrate this year’s IWD than to support an initiative that is enriching the professional advancement of female and non-binary photojournalists,” said Elizabeth Pratt, director of professional client development and support and Canon Professional Services. “Women Photograph has created a home for professional women photojournalists to showcase their work for potential clients and Canon is honored to help continue the momentum of this initiative.”

Canon Professional Services will host a Women Photograph Workshop at the Canon Customer Experience Center in Orange County, CA in December. Dates and details will be provided by Women Photograph.

“Canon is an ideal strategic partner as we ensure that our industry’s chief storytellers are as diverse as the communities they hope to represent,” said Daniella Zalcman, founder and director of Women Photograph. “So much of breaking into the photojournalism industry relies on networking and professional development events that can be prohibitively expensive and the generous support from Canon will help our photographers access these resources.”

Video: The Man Who Turned a Russian Truck Into a Glass Plate Camera

Back in December 2016, we featured the work of Kurt Moser, an ambrotype photographer who turned a Russian truck into a massive camera for his glass plate photography. After seeing the article, the team at Valkyr Productions connected with Moser and created this beautiful 9-minute video profile about the photographer and his work.

In the film, Moser talks about ambrotype photography and shares his passion for the historical process. He ventured into the medium after spending three decades working in conflict zones around the world.

The Northern Italy-based photographer found his Russian URAL military truck while on assignment at the Berlin airport, and he managed to raise over $700,000 on Kickstarter to accomplish his dreams of turning the truck into a glass plate camera and darkroom for his ambitious projects.

Moser will be using his monstrous truck-camera to photograph both the Dolomites and the lives of the 80- and 90-year-old farmers working the land in his region. He’ll also be exhibiting the truck and ambrotypes at the Berlin Museum and in shows around the world when the work is complete.

You can see more of Moser’s work and learn more about his story on his website and Instagram.

15 Amazing Photos That Will Show You How Silhouettes Can Be Used Creatively in Photography

There are various composition tools that you can utilize when framing a photograph. Perspective, color, space, symmetry, leading lines, shape, juxtaposition, and rule of thirds, among others, are all different types of composition tools at your disposal.

The list of terms mentioned above might seem daunting to someone starting out in photography but when seen in a visual form by way of examples, it becomes much easier to understand. In this post, we're going to look at examples of how silhouettes can be used in photography to emphasize shape and create amazing shots.

Backlit subjects produce silhouettes and can often provide you with a storytelling element and add a sense of mystery to your photographs. Portraits, landscapes, street photographs, abstracts- silhouettes work great in all of these situations and many more. We hope that this photo collection inspires you to create such shots of your own!

If you'd like to get better at photographic composition and learn concepts that go beyond the basics, do take a look at Kent DuFault's guide on advanced composition, but for now, let's sit back and enjoy these photographs.

Wacom’s Refreshed Intuos Pen Tablet is a Cheap Choice for Photo Editing

Wacom has introduced its newly refreshed Intuos pen tablet. If you’re a photographer in search of an affordable drawing tablet for photo editing, the Intuos is one you may want to take a look at.

Geared toward “creative beginners and enthusiasts,” the new Intuos can easily be connected to Windows and Mac computers via USB. There’s also optional Bluetooth connectivity, letting you pair it with a PC by pushing a button.

Accuracy has been improved in this latest model, which has a +/- 0.25mm digital tolerance. The battery-free pen features EMR (Electro-Magnetic Resonance) technology and has 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity. It also has a 7mm reading height.

Spare Felt and Flex nibs can be stored within the pen itself.

The Intuos measures 8.8mm thin — about the same thickness as your average smartphone — and it comes in two sizes: a 7-inch active area in the Small size and a 10-inch area in the Medium model.

Over 75% of the tablet’s width is the active area. The density of the tablet is 100 lines per mm recognition of pen on tablet. Both ergonomics and weight have been improved compared to the previous iteration.

And if you purchase the Intuos, you get about $160 worth of creative software bundled with it. In addition to Corel Painter Essentials 6 for design/illustration and Celsys Clip Studio Paint Pro for comic/Manga, you’ll be able to download Corel AfterShot 3 for RAW photo editing.

Other features of the Intuos include a built-in pen tray, four express keys, an LED indicator, and three color choices (charcoal black, pistachio green, and berry pink).

The Wacom Intuos is available now from the Wacom website for $79 for the standard Small unit, $99 for the Bluetooth Small unit, and $199 for the Bluetooth Medium unit.
